Day 9 | Rice Cake Soup: A Traditional Korean New Year’s Dish
Rice Cake Soup: A Traditional Korean New Year’s Dish
In Korea, we eat tteokguk (rice cake soup) on Seollal (Lunar New Year’s Day). It’s similar to how Americans eat turkey on Thanksgiving or how the French enjoy galette des rois as a New Year’s tradition.
The recipe for tteokguk is quite simple. All you need is beef bone broth, sliced rice cakes, beef, eggs, seaweed, salt, and soy sauce. Some people also add dumplings, depending on their preference.
Last week, during the Seollal holiday, I found myself really craving my mom’s homemade tteokguk. I’ve eaten this dish every New Year’s since I was a child, so while I love its flavor, it also brings a sense of warmth—a feeling of my mother’s love and the comfort of family. Maybe it’s because I’m pregnant, but this year, I especially longed for my mom’s cooking.
Tteokguk Recipe
- Prepare a pot of beef bone broth.
- Sauté the beef in a pan.
- Add the beef and sliced rice cakes to the boiling broth.
- Beat an egg and cook it into a thin omelet.
- Slice the omelet and seaweed into strips for garnish.
- Taste the soup and season with salt and soy sauce as needed.
Simple, right?
I also got curious about what other countries eat during their New Year celebrations. It turns out that rice cakes are common in East Asian countries where rice is a staple, but tteokguk itself is uniquely Korean.
