Day 2 | What are the differecens among Nordic, Danish, and Japandi?

                                Above(Nordic) Bottom(Mid century modern)

Through my activities on Instagram under the theme of home styling, I’ve discovered my own taste. I realized this by noticing the characteristics of the photos I liked. This might be true for everyone, but when I didn’t know my own style, I found Instagram to be very helpful.

At first, I was drawn to Scandinavian white-tone interiors, but later I shifted toward mid-century modern. This led me to buy Danish vintage furniture and enjoy following the home styling of my Danish friends on Instagram. Then I discovered something interesting: many of my Danish friends were following minimalist Japanese styles.

So now, I’m styling my home by blending Nordic, Danish, Japanese, and mid-century modern designs. However, I’ve become curious about the subtle differences between Nordic, Danish, and Japanese home styling.

-

Nordic Style: Emphasizes the use of natural light, with wood and white tones dominating the space. It highlights coziness (hygge) and warmth by skillfully incorporating textured fabrics such as wool and linen.

Danish Style: Takes Nordic style a step further by centering on designer furniture. It features iconic pieces from designers like Arne Jacobsen and Hans Wegner, along with bold elements such as art pieces or accent colors. While maintaining minimalism, it also showcases an experimental approach to design.

Japanese Style: Combines the traditional beauty of natural materials (wood, paper, stone) with modern minimalism. The spaces are simple yet profound, adding warmth and vitality through plants or vintage furniture. The essence lies in “functional beauty,” with a sense of order and balance that creates a peaceful atmosphere.

I think Japanese home styling is the hardest to replicate. The photo above is of my home, and that’s also my Instagram profile. What do you think? Which style do you think it leans toward?
